Plus-sized Stylish Swimwear Options

By: Andrea Dilea

In the past, plus-sized women did not have many options for swimwear. Today, there are more and more companies producing a side variety of plus-sized styles. This will help when it comes time to choosing your suit for the summer. This ever-growing market segment will find numerous choices. No longer will you need to cover up when the heat is on. There are options that will make you look and feel beautiful.

When it is time to buy bathing suits there are a few things you need to consider. What will flatter your body the most at a time when you are wearing the least? Full figured women should look for support for the bust first. Built in bras, and bras with underwire in plus sizes are available. These bras will provide support and therefore have a slimming effect. The makers of plus size swim wear will sometimes add both support and slenderizing effects. Buy your swim wear with the same considerations that you use when buying your bras and you will look good and feel great.

You should next think about what type of suit is best suited to your body shape. In general, one piece bathing suits look better on the plus size figure than two piece bathing suits. One large reason for this is because a one piece suit creates a uniform, slimming line which highlights the positive aspects and downplays the negative aspects of one's figure.

The two most flattering styles of swimwear for the full figured beachgoer are the tankini and the blouson style suit. The tankini is a two-piece suit but is not a bikini: rather, it looks like a tank top and complementary boy cut shorts (or bikini bottom, if you prefer). There are so many designs that can make tankinis look sporty, fun, flirty, or elegant. This kind of suit can be helpful to downplay or hide uncomfortable areas of the plus sized body, and it is stylish and pretty to boot. Tankinis with a longer top can meet the bottom and appear similar to a one-piece suit, and shorter tops show a bit of skin between the two pieces. You can buy your tankini as a matching set or you can mix and match to find your own unique combination that expresses just your style.

For women who want to show off their legs but cover the top half of their bodies, a blouson is a good choice. It gives a full figure a sense of balance through the top and bottom of the body. Other features of the blouson that flatter plus size women are the straps and small cap sleeves.

You want to choose a swimsuit with straps that are wide enough and have a flattering cut at the leg line. In general, the higher the cut of the leg, the longer and trimmer your legs will appear. If you have large thighs or short legs, stay away from suits with tiny skirts at the waist - though they're advertised to camouflage larger legs, they actually make you appear even wider. Additionally, they can be restrictive and uncomfortable.
