What's hot with plastic surgery in Cape Town?

Welcome to the New Year! 2009 promises to be a busy twelve months for cosmetic surgery in Cape Town and medical tourism for South Africa in general. The exchange rate works well in the favour of any interested party, allowing you to sip a cocktail on the beach of Camps Bay as you recover from your rhinoplasty or tummy-tuck. Have you have considered which procedure you are going to choose from? If not, then the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has predicted the top cosmetic procedures which will be popular in 2009. Read below and consider your cosmetic destiny, as it were.

• Many patients opt to have their cosmetic surgery abroad, as relaxation and recovery are the best tools for a successful recuperation. This is in striking contrast to the booming field of aesthetic surgery in hotspots such as Miami, New York and Tokyo. A better quality of after-care is now favoured with doctors around the globe developing newer techniques with faster healing periods to aid in healing. Plastic surgery will improve in leaps and bounds.

• Cosmetic fillers such as Botox, Evolence, Restylane and others will evolve and flood the market with cheaper rates as patients seek to improve their wrinkled features, one micro-needle at a time.

• Obesity is the number one reason behind surgical procedures such as tummy-tucks, liposuction and abdominoplasty. As our waistlines expand, so will the necessity for procedures such as these. ASAPS predicts a 40% growth rate in this ever-developing market.

• Botox has been the favoured cosmetic filler for over a decade now. A new player has entered the market, namely Reloxin. Like Botox, Reloxin comes in the form of an injection and is remarkably cheaper to produce. An FDA approval is looming and once Reloxin gains approval, predictions of a global changeover to this miracle drug, seems eminent.

• The economic crisis bears fruit to many burdens and plastic surgery is unfortunately one of the luxuries which are the hardest hit. Choosing to have Cosmetic surgery abroad will continue to grow in popularity, yet not in a positive or healthy direction. Illegal, home-based procedures [such as one woman who injected olive oil into her face] will progress and further horror stories will be created as a result. These ‘bargain’ injection tools are obtained offshore and then incorrectly applied.

• Pure, non-invasive surgery is the way of a brighter, advanced surgical future and liposuction is currently leading the way. SonoScultpt and UltraShape are two techniques that are still in the testing phase and continue to be worked on as the year progresses.

• Men are the new cosmetic surgery market. 80 percent of the 1000 men surveyed, stated that they would not be embarrassed if they were to undergo a surgical procedure or if their relatives were aware that they had been in for any kind of cosmetic operation.

• The level of education and the degree of training that a board-certified plastic surgeon has received will play a massive role in the selection of a personal cosmetic surgeon. Consumer sophistication has developed into the point where everything from hamburgers, to iPods to surgeries are now scanned with a fine toothed comb before a choice is made.

The ASAPS is entirely devoted to the advancement of Plastic Surgery across America and the rest of the globe. It is their advances and findings in their respective fields that ensure that cosmetic surgery abroad is safe, fair and the best there is.
